  • "Why, is it some kind of anniversary?"
  • "Why did you cry when you read me the 'In Case of Moon Disaster' speech?"
  • "Oh, is that where 'The Eagle has landed' comes from? Because that's like a catchphrase, right?"
  • "Is that [The guy who said 'one giant leap for mankind'] Buzz Aldrin?"
  • "Is that how they named Buzz Lightyear?"
Mind you, I was -5 years old at the time, but still!

So Jodi is not a science history geek. (I'm sure there are holes in your history knowledge in some area or other.) Help inform her.

It horrifies me that the greatest engineering achievement in all of history is completely lost on so many people, even though it happened within living memory. It's not a science thing. It's not a geek thing. It's a pivotal moment that stands apart from all of human history and informs who we are as a species and what we're capable of.

As others have noted however, it's also a great opportunity for you to educate. BTW, even though it's a dramatization, the HBO series From The Earth To The Moon does a better job of conveying both the overall facts and the magnitude of the race to the moon than any other treatment of the subject I've seen (and I've watched/read a lot!). IMHO, the entire series should be required viewing in schools. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. If you have, I recommend lending a copy to someone who hasn't.

Bother. It's not owned by any library I have free access to, and Forsyth charges $30 for a card. I'll have to wait.
