Jodi's waiting now to talk to Prof. Tad Schmaltz (no word yet on whether he's a little bit sentimental). There's no elevator to the second floor of the West Duke Building, but who needs an elevator when you're floating?

Since she's got an appointment here at 11am and at UNC-Chapel Hill at 1pm, my next task is to get directions from here to there.

Duke and Chapel Hill

Both look great. Jodi's in a seminar on philosophy of science until 6pm, and I've been chilling on campus. I've got two $2 Dover Thrift Editions to read, but so far my battery has lasted long enough to catch up on entering receipts into Pocket Quicken, read email, and take care of some business (see adjacent entry).

The phone seems capable of WEP, but so far I haven't been able to use WEP to connect to a non-beaconing WLAN on channel 6, and I don't know where the problem is. I did manage to use ssh while on the Duke campus (over the cell network, not Duke's), and the experience wasn't horrible but I'd never want to try to do critical work over such a dodgy laggy connection.

Fun with rent

I swear I wrote a check for the rent on September 22. It's in Pocket Quicken and everything. But apparently it never got to the office; the credit union hasn't seen it.

jitterbug5bi5 has agreed to drop off a check for the full amount, and the landlord (knowing that we've never been late on any other rent payment) will waive the late fee. And, of course, as soon as we get home, I'll write a check to jitterbug5bi5 to reimburse her, and give her a ride to the ATM. I owe her at least that courtesy.

So this is a public IOU to jitterbug5bi5 and a public thank-you to her and Fairway Oaks Apartments.
