I'm not going to wait in line. bfads.net had a link to a really cheap Dell notebook, the Vostro 1000. It comes with a 120GB hard drive (with Windows XP Home preinstalled), AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 (1.7GHz/512KB), 8x DVD±RW, 802.11g minicard, and a 1280x800 15" screen. Including tax and free shipping, it's under $500. (I also ordered 2GB of memory, shipping separately, for under $100 total, since 1GB is likely to slow me down.)
No mail-in rebates necessary -- but it's unquestionably a business expense, which will act as a bit of a rebate when I file my taxes.
