Is it possible to change the settings on a MacBook running a slightly older version of OS X so that when you close the lid, the AirPort will not power down? It's rather annoying to have to wait to reconnect to the local WLAN every time you open the lid again.

see

for instructions on how to speed up the sleep and wake cycle.

If you plug in the external power adapter, external video, and external keyboard it will stay awake when closed. I'm not sure if there's another way to make it stay awake when closed - but it might be worth googling.

afaik, no way to do this elegantly. you may be able to kill the powersaving sleep stuff in the openboot firmware, but you're playing with black magic if you wander there too long.
