If a low-end consumer device expects 5V (and at least 2A) and I've got an AC-to-DC adapter with more tips than Londo Mollari but I have to choose between 4.5V, 6V, and don't use it, which should I choose?

my dad said the lower one will eventually burn out the motor. the higher one will prob fry it very fast.
