sylvarknobody wins for making the most entertaining guess.But what actually happened was...
It displayed the error message "FireWire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the USB cable provided."
As far as I can tell, a dampened straw wrapper managed to convince my iPod that it was a FireWire cable.
