I was wondering earlier today why there's a ¤ symbol on my phone's list of symbols. My old buddy symbols.com came to the rescue with this explanation, following which I was able to find an explanation at Currency (typography).

Your link to symbols.com says that ¤ can be used to indicate a hexadecimal number... but I don't think I've ever seen it used for that. I've only ever seen '0x' as a hex indicator. Interesting.

Ah, 0x must be an ASCII compositor of ¤. Makes sense visually.
