I don't know which of my friends had these, but I remember loving the idea of customizing your own drawing with mix-and-match plates.  It's the predecessor of avatar generators.

I hated these because I was pretty good at drawing without any help, and a lot of well-meaning members of my family gave these kind of sets to me because I was "the artist in the family".
