Wouldn't you know it?

I might have bought a One Laptop Per Child XO laptop earlier in the year, when I saw a few of them at Octane, but they weren't available at all (except on eBay). Now they're available on Amazon for $199. The catch is that it's sold in pairs, with one going to a child in a developing country (a $200 donation) and one going to you, for a total price of $399. Which is a bit higher than an Asus Eee 900, but it's a lot better, too.

"It features a 7.5-inch, 1200×900 pixel TFT screen and self-refreshing display with higher resolution (200 DPI) than 95 percent of the laptops on the market today." And it's rugged as hell. It has to be -- it's made to survive deserts AND small children.

So if you have a child who's about the right age for her/his first laptop, this might be the one for you. And, yes, I do get a kickback if you buy it through this link. Bless you.

That sounds like a great program! My husband mentioned doing it, but we're just not in a financial position to do so right now.

I agree with the above commenter -- the one who, I guess, didn't care about football when she chose her university -- both with the fact that it does sound like a great program and that we're not in a financial position to do so...
