"I know no method to secure the repeal of bad, obnoxious, or unjust laws so effective as their strict execution." -- Ulysses S. Grant

Watch what happens when people conspire to act legally -- in this case, to obey the 55mph speed limit on a major interstate highway in tandem, thus forcing everyone behind them to do the same.

I can't watch the video (no flash on this computer, at work), but I will say that driving 50-55 mph makes for great gas mileage.

Love it! Though I wish everyone would drive more slowly. What's the dang rush, I say! Need to get to work faster? Totally in a hurry to get that root canal? Just can't wait to buy Lactaid and cake flour??

I've heard that 55-60 is the best for gas usage with current cars. Depends on the model, of course. Once you get over 65 though, it's gas guzzing no matter what car you have.

It does depdend on the car. My 2000 Plymouth Voyager (3.0L v6) does best at about 50mph - 35ish mpg. Above that speed, it just goes downhill.

Where as mine [Honda Accord, '89] seems to do best at 60-65ish, getting about 28mpg. At 50-55, it gets about 23-25, even on long streaches at near constant speeds.

"Be nice", indeed.

I have to completely disagree with this.

One, they are *in no way* showing how dumb the law is. I fail to see how this will force speed-limit or penalty changes.

Two, they are pissing folks off... increasing the liklihood of road-rage.

They might be all high and mighty about it, but they're just stroking their own egos with this 'experiment.'

It reminds me of when a convoy of truck drivers staged a protest last year in LA by stopping (or going very slowly... I forget) in the middle of the highway. They didn't get the money they were looking for, and apparently lost a whole lot business as well.

To note, I have no problem with folks driving the speed limit. And yes, it *is* the law. A law that is really only in place to 'keep things under control,' and not as a hard rule... unless of course the cops are in a particularly bad mood :)

That's pretty cool. Annoying as shit if you're actually on the road, but pretty cool.

Also proves how easily a DoS against the highway system can be done with just four cars and some cellphones. Hmmmm...

I'd love to see that experiment repeated with some cops standing by. Even if they are driving the speed limit, that formation driving could still easily lead to tickets if classified by the police as a dangerous driving...

For extra credit, how many suddenly parked cars would it take to block a major interchange in four directions during rush hour? And how many in total if you parked a few of them half a mile back, blocking the shoulders to slow down the tow trucks?
