So I called State Farm and said I needed them to authorize a full-size car instead of a standard (it's only a few dollars a day more). I explained to them that the car I had been given was way too small -- that I'm 6'4" and that's why I drive the Taurus that was damaged by their customer. I said I couldn't even see the road unless I craned my neck way forward.

And after a brief call to my garage to make sure they were doing the repairs, they put it into the rental company's computer. I called them up and they said "Yup, we can do that. As soon as we get one in, we'll call you."

So now I'm not driving the car that wasn't there, even though it's now here, and I'll be driving the car that still isn't there.

I dunno, I'll probably drive the Lancer to pick up some lunch (I have GOT to go shopping and do some cooking tonight!) and back to the rental shop -- but I'm glad I won't have to do much more with it.

i'm so glad you are going to be in a safer car and that it's all been worked out so you don't have to pay for it when you were not at fault!

now what happened? I'm behind on vax, but i didn't see anything that explained what happened! I'm guessing your body is okay, just the white car is hurt?

June 15, 2003:
So as I was going to Home Depot, a woman clipped the back left corner of my car. (I was stopped just inside the parking lot; she was leaving and turned left too sharply, from too far back.) We're both State Farm customers, so that'll speed up the claims process. Just cosmetic damage, as far as anyone knows. Just a pain in the ass, not a pain in the neck.

It took them a week to reach the other driver to confirm the details, although I'm not even sure that was necessary as she filed a claim too. Anyway, I called them up and said "I'm getting sick of waiting but not so sick that I'd pay a $500 deductible, can we get this started please?", and they called the driver while I was on hold. And that was that. I've just been waiting a few days to take care of other details in my life before dealing with the car.

ah, brain cell leakage, that explains a lot. i had forgotten about that. it's lovely to have a minor vehicle incident.

Actually, I'm starting to think that if I'm in another accident where someone else is at fault, maybe I ought to skip telling State Farm about it and just contact the other driver's company. What would other insurance companies do in a situation like that?

in the accident that befell Jezebel(maysherestinpeace) we ended up dealing with both insurance companies. we called our insurance company (nationwide) who explained that they would be happy to honor the claim and go after the other guys insurance co (geico)for us. we ended up going through geico because we did not have rental reimbursement on our policy and nationwide would not front us that amount. either way, because we were not at fault our insurance company considers it a null incident. geico dealt with our complaint in what i am sure is the same manner they would have dealt with one of their insured. i.e. reluctantly and pathetically, but in the end they did cut us a check and pay for the rental car while we shopped for a new vehicle.
