Has anyone got a copy of the MySQL 5.0 Certification Study Guide I could borrow? I didn't realize there was a certification program, and there's a job posting that requires the certification. I'm guessing I could study the book and take the exam locally (walk-in), and have my certification. Even if I didn't get this particular job, I'd still have the certification.

Of course, if I get the book from Amazon, I'd also get a certificate that reduces the exam cost by $50, so it's probably worth it... hmm, why don't a bunch of you do your Christmas shopping early through that link so I can get kickbacks enough to pay for the book? Thanks in advance. :)

Um, this is the first time I've heard of the certification. Are there many jobs that ask for it?

If this is the only job that asks for it, maybe it's not worth the money.

MySQL's popular enough (and the cert rare enough) that having the cert in your resume is an eye-catcher (for anyone hiring for db/sql work). It won't bring in the big bucks that being Oracle cert'd would, but oracle db's are just a nightmare to deal with and the certificatino process for them is Not Easy.

Ben, did your google break? http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS240US243&q=MySQL+5.0+Certification+Study+Guide+filetype%3Apdf&btnG=Search

Gosh no, my google is up. And downloading pirated books is theft and wrong and unethical. I'd much rather buy a legitimate copy.

Thanks for the advice on the cert!

if you haven't poked around job listings, and enjoy db work, oracle certification is not something to dismiss out of hand; cert'd oracle admins with a pulse easily demand 80-90k and assuming you have talent and/or passion, 100+k is not unreasonable (well, at least in miami, i imagine atl would be similar, being another metropolis and also being a travel hub)

w/r/t book theft: do you know someone that works in a library?

My problem is there are too many people certified without any knowledge, but that's from an interviewer's take. I've interviewed too many people who are "qualified" by their cert, but otherwise can't do much or done much.

That said, I have no db certs and no knowledge of dbs :-)

If you do decide to do it, good luck. Kick some boot-ay!

The nearest libraries owning this book, according to WorldCat.org, are in Kentucky.

I know little about Oracle, and am not sure how I'd get experience (ain't it commercial?) or how expensive the certification path is.

that's the difficult part about getting oracle cert'd :)

@tiger_stripes: yes paper-techs are common, but some certs really do have weight behind them -- oracle being one, precisely because it's difficult to get without actually using the product (so either you have unofficial on-the-job exp or you're Totally Hardcore Studyer); other examples being RHCE (redhat only certs at their facility in NC and there's a 2nd day all practical ("here's a broken machine. fix it without reinstalling. you have 2 hours.") component) and the CCIE which comes in 2 versions, a 1-day where they give you the networks and you get to set it up on Cisco's equipment or a 2-day where your first day is creating the networks according to requirements and second day setting it up. MS gives away their certs, but the more uncommon, the more they're usually worth.

In any case, the cert is not to get you the job, the cert is to get you the interview.
