Is anyone else disturbed by the news that major ISPs have agreed to accept government blacklists? Naturally, they're using child pornography as the excuse:

And if these ISPs actually pay an employee to check every single site on the list to make sure they're not just uncritically accepting arbitrary censorship from the government, I'll star in 2girls1cupand1sylvar.

...It is with a queasy feeling of history in retreat that poetry lovers discover that WBAI, long the radio flagship of cocky resistance to government excess, decided last week that it couldn’t risk a 50th anniversary broadcast of the late poet’s recording of “Howl.” The station retreated out of fear that the Federal Communications Commission would levy large obscenity fines that might bankrupt the small-budget station...

And here's the poem, from http://members.tripod.com/~Sprayberry/poems/howl.txt:

My bro [livejournal.com profile] mattyo3000 can't read my blog right now because Websense calls sylvar.livejournal.com "Uncategorized" and his IT department has blocked "Uncategorized" sites. So I've submitted a request to Websense to have my blog reclassified as "Society and Lifestyles: Personal Websites", and if that doesn't work, he can read my RSS feed in Google Reader, Bloglines, etc.

Here's hoping they get it straightened out soon...

UPDATE:

Greetings,

Thank you for writing to Websense.

The site you submitted is a virtually hosted site that was not in our database. However, it shares an IP address with another site in our database which caused an unintended overblock. The site has been reviewed and categorized accordingly:

http://sylvar.livejournal.com - Personal Web Sites

Categorization updates should be available in the next scheduled publication of the database. A new database is published every business day, five days a week, Pacific Standard Time.

Thank you for your assistance,

The response came in less than an hour. Now that's what I call good eats!
