Oof, I thought I might get 10 out of 10 on the Credo Reference Friday Brainteaser since it's on food and cooking. I did get 8 of 10, though. Let's see how y'all/yinz/you guys do.

1. The Brussels sprout is a type of cabbage: true or false?

2. Venison is the flesh of which animal?

3. What kind of food is "Danish blue"?

4. What is the meaning of the phrase "au gratin"?

5. Who wrote a famous book called "The Book of Household Management" containing 4000 recipes, published in 1861?

6. Which dessert consisting of a meringue base or shell filled with whipped cream and fruit was created as a compliment to a Russian ballerina during her visit to Australia and New Zealand in 1926?

7. Is taramasalata made from meat, fish, or cereals?

8. Michelin stars are awarded for impressive culinary endeavour. What is the highest number of stars ever awarded: three, four or five?

9. What is the usual North American word for a courgette?

10. Which fiery sauce gets its name from a word meaning "damp earth"?

Answers here.

OK, I'm sure that McCain would do much, much better than me on this quiz. I got only 10 points. 11, depending on your margin of error for "a rough guess".

Take the quiz and see if you know more than the politicians you poke fun at.

Hint: "Byzantine" is not a correct answer.

So how'd you do? Post here and/or on your own blog.

I got 80.6% Correct at http://www.jakemandell.com/tonedeaf/

90+: World-class musical abilities
75+: Excellent musical abilities
60+: Good musical abilities
Less than 50%: You may have a pitch perception deficit

And no, they don't make it easy to blog your results, but it was fascinating stuff. I suspect I'd fare somewhat better with decent headphones (not crappy laptop speakers) and a more useful mental state.

I'm curious to see how all y'all do... and [livejournal.com profile] momster1 and [livejournal.com profile] mattyo3000, that includes you guys!
